Peace in His Presence

Can peace be found in the presence of a person? Often, we embrace the peace and security of a parent, spouse, or close friend. Just being with them washes peace over our souls. But what about our God Friend, Jesus? Jesus Himself is called the Prince of Peace, and He also felt comfort and peace in the presence of His Father. He then turns around and shares that peace with us.

Jesus offers: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Our world is not a peace-filled and tranquil place. It is replete with strife, disunity, stress, and chaos. But this present world can never rob the peace found in the presence of the God of Peace. Jesus reminds us that we shall experience tribulation, but thankfully that is not the last chapter in the story.

Through His finished work on the cross and His glorious resurrection, Jesus has overcome the world. The victory has already been won. The peace that we find in His presence has already been purchased for us. And personally, for two thousand years, he has defeated the sin of those who call out to Him. One day, in the not too far future, He will permanently defeat the stress and evil of this world, that evil that hurts the poor and marginalized. But then or now, He offers the peace found in His presence.

Can I regularly and faithfully find peace in the presence of Jesus, trusting that He will regularly and faithfully overcome this chaotic world and its tribulation? Yes! Peace in His presence is possible!
