Jesus affirms His prophesied ministry goals in Luke 4:18, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor…” Throughout history, wise men and prophets have focused on reaching the rich, seeking benefactors to support them in their quest to share valuable truths. Often, the poor were overlooked, not being able to compensate the sage for his message.
But Jesus was destined to be different. A prophecy from Isaiah shares that God’s Son was first to preach His good news to the poor, giving the average human the opportunity to think deep, eternal thoughts, and aspire to the spiritual goodness and freedom found in Jesus and His teachings. By preaching His truth to people who could not pay Him back, Jesus was at liberty to offer hope and healing to the masses, who would go on to adore Him and give their lives for His kingdom and purposes. What a beautiful concept, building eternal hope through a grass-roots movement that could impact the world.
