Garden Club Reflections- Proud Contempt

The psalmist prays a unique prayer, revealing the motives of his enemies, “Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are of ease, and with the contempt of the proud.” (Psalm 123:3,4) This man has enemies who look down upon him with scorning and contempt. Sad qualities, indeed!

Contempt is a feeling that someone is below you, not worthy of even thinking about. The proud in this prayer are not unlike today’s evil elite, who look upon common humanity with disdain, only using them for their own benefit and profit. And the only One powerful enough to combat this level of contempt is Almighty God, the Judge of His creation. Even today, this prayer can help us to keep our perspective straight, focusing on the Overcomer of this dark world.
